Geo Bowersmith
Geo is a life-long activist, a consultant and a coach working at the intersection of individual growth and organizational change. With more than 20 years experience working inside SEIU with members, organizers, senior staff, elected leaders and officers, they have supported union leaders through culture change initiatives, forming and/or reforming teams, meeting and/or retreat planning and facilitation, curriculum development, strategic planning, manager program development and leadership development.
Geo’s theory of change for consulting clients involves building a participatory process for individuals, groups and teams to leverage whole-system culture change work that identifies and closes the gap between an organization’s espoused values and their everyday actions and behaviors. A particular focus of Geo’s coaching work is supporting white directors and/or managers to become more racially literate, understand their own racial impact and successfully lead diverse teams.
Geo brings healing-centered, trauma-informed approaches and somatic awareness training to work with clients on developing well-being and resilience practices to support a lifetime of activism and leadership. As a white person dedicated to racial and economic justice, Geo partners with clients who are interested in enhancing their skills around interrupting patterns of oppression and building their capacity for navigating power and privilege across race, class, gender and other identities.
Geo is known for their calming presence, creative spirit and quest for clarity. Prior to consulting, Geo held senior director roles in national and local organizations and has worked on community and labor organizing, legislative and electoral campaigns.
Originally from California, Geo now resides outside Washington DC and works with local unions and central labor councils across North America. Geo opened their own consulting practice in 2020 to partner with mission-driven clients to advance social justice. Geo Bowersmith Coaching & Consulting LLC is trans-owned and operated.
